Mass terminations at the U.S. Department of Agriculture are “crippling” the agency, upending federal workers’ lives and leaving farmers and rural communities without needed support, according to interviews with 15 recently fired employees stationed across the U.S.
Since taking power Jan. 20, the Trump administration has quickly frozen funding and fired federal workers en masse. USDA terminations started Feb. 13, the day Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins was sworn in. Rollins welcomed the quasi-governmental Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, led by billionaire Elon Musk, to find parts of the USDA budget to cut.
Terminated employees helped farmers build irrigation systems, battled invasive diseases that could “completely decimate” crops that form whole industries and assisted low-income seniors in rural areas in fixing leaky roofs. That work will now be significantly delayed — perhaps indefinitely — as remaining employees’ workloads grow, the employees said. - Investigate Midwest

Did you read that Secretary Rollins announced on Feb 26 a billion dollar plan to combat the avain flu in hopes of bringing down egg prices ?
ReplyDeleteUSDA announced plans to "deploy 20 trained epidemiologists as part of its increased biosecurity audits and Wildlife Biosecurity Assessments to provide actionable and timely advice to producers on how to reduce HPAI risk at their facilities. These experts will help improve current biosecurity measures to focus on protecting against spread through wild birds in addition to lateral spread."
The question has to be .... are there "20 trained epidemiologists" still employed by the USDA available to be deployed ?
DOGE is supposed to cut out "fraud" and reduce spending ... so do you think that spending $2.2 Billion (not sure when that was appropriated by Congress {my guess it wasn't but just redirected by Trump}) but my gut says there will be a lot of claims for destroyed chickens that never existed ... so surely all those Republicans who are pointing out the fraud associated with the Covid payments, will be watching the Trump Administration closely.
